Ramon Montoya 1880-1949
One of the first guitarists to record and to tour outside of Spain, he did for flamenco guitar what Andres Segovia did for classical. Montoya (not to be confused with his nephew Carlos Montoya) is still a towering figure in the world of flamenco guitar. His innovations were a big influence on the artistry of such heavyweights as Sabicas, Paco de Lucía, Paco Peña and others.

Sabicas 1912-1990
Considered by many to be the greatest. Sabicas began playing guitar at the age of 4 and made his performing debut 2 years later. His early style was influenced by Ramón Montoya. Extensive collaboration with important cantaores (male Flamenco singers) of the period helped him develop his unique personal style.

Nino Ricardo 1904-1972
One of the great virtuosos. We hear his ideas played by many a flamenco guitarist these days. Strong and traditional-sounding by modern standards, but certainly (at the time) evolving the sound of flamenco guitar.

Paco de Lucia 1947-Present
Building his stellar reputation during the thriving flamenco scene of the '60's and '70's, Paco has been called the greatest flamenco guitarist who ever lived. This is a matter of debate, but Sabicas himself named Paco as his "successor", and certainly this is the case, for he built upon the tradition and took flamenco in new directions, becoming a name known not just by all flamencos but by many outside of flamenco as well.

One of the most important flamencos since Paco de Lucía. Tomatito became a sensation at an early age when he was discovered by Paco, and began working in part with legendary flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla.
